Moving is the perfect opportunity to purge the clutter you have been accumulating for years. The less you move, the less you pay in moving costs, and the faster you can settle into your new home. But decluttering an entire house can feel overwhelming. The key is to tackle it room by room with a clear plan.
Start with the rooms you use least — guest bedrooms, basements, attics, and garages. These spaces tend to be dumping grounds for things you forgot you owned. Go through everything and sort items into four categories: keep, donate, sell, and trash. Be honest with yourself. If you have not used something in the past year and it does not have sentimental value, it is time to let it go.
The kitchen is a surprisingly productive room to declutter. Open every cabinet and drawer. Duplicate utensils, rarely used gadgets, mismatched containers, chipped dishes, and expired pantry items can all go. Most people find they can eliminate a quarter to a third of their kitchen contents without missing a single item.
Closets are where the real volume hides. Clothing, shoes, bags, and accessories accumulate faster than we realize. A good rule of thumb: if you have not worn it in the past 12 months and it does not have a specific future occasion, donate it. The same goes for linens, towels, and bedding. Your new home is a fresh start — take only what you actually use and love.
Garages and storage areas deserve special attention. Old paint cans, broken tools, holiday decorations you never use, outgrown sports equipment, and random hardware all add up. Be ruthless here — these items are heavy, awkward to move, and expensive to transport. Clear out everything you will not use in the new home.
For larger items like furniture, be realistic about what fits in your new space. Measure rooms in your new home and compare against your existing furniture. Pieces that will not fit or do not match the new layout should be sold, donated, or removed before moving day.
Once you have sorted everything, the fastest way to get rid of the discard pile is to schedule a junk removal appointment. We can come in and haul away furniture, boxes, appliances, and miscellaneous clutter in a single trip. Many of our customers in Warren book us the week before their move so they are only packing what they actually want to keep.
Decluttering before a move takes effort upfront, but the payoff is enormous. Lower moving costs, faster unpacking, and a clutter-free start in your new home. It is one of the best investments you can make in a smooth, stress-free move.
